How Does the Spring Equinox Affect Pest Control

The spring equinox is here, which means that winter is officially over. While the lambs are being born and the sun is becoming less shy, some pests are starting to stir which presents a number of new challenges within our properties.

What Pests Are Most Common in Spring?

Winter is a relatively quiet time for pests. The cold means that they have a tough time surviving or breeding, and only rodents are a pervasive problem.

However, as things start to heat up towards summer, certain species will begin to become much more of an issue. We will go through each spring month and discuss what pests you can expect to deal with.

What Pests Are Most Common in Spring?

March

Throughout March ants will begin to stir. You should not expect them to be a significant issue, but the warm temperatures will mean some nests start to become active.

Moths will start to enter their peak season. These are one of the main pests we are called out to deal with, and they will remain very active for the entirety of Spring.

On a more positive note, rodent activity will begin to drop off. The warmer temperatures will mean they are less reliant on our habitations for shelter from the cold.

April

Moth activity will remain very high throughout April, so be on the lookout for signs of their presence.

Biting insects such as bed bugs and fleas will also start to become active. If you are waking up with marks on your body, there is a good chance pest insects are the issue.

Ants and flies will also be moderately active. These species won’t present an immediate danger, but we can have them taken care of quickly and effectively.

May

As temperatures begin to warm in May, you can expect wasp nests to become active. Last year, the wasp season began significantly earlier due to warmer temperatures. However, there is no reason to expect the same trend this year.

Moths will still be very common, reaching their peak in this month before calming down during the summer.

Biting insects will still present a problem, and ants/flies will remain moderately active.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are a hardy species that remain moderately active throughout every season of the year. They aren’t particularly active in spring, although they are still a constant threat in unhygienic environments.

What Is the Spring Equinox?

The Spring equinox signals the beginning of Spring. Technically, it means that the Northern Hemisphere is beginning to tilt towards the sun, very slowly. This means that days will be longer along with significantly more sunlight.

What Is the Spring Equinox?

This year, the spring equinox was on the twentieth of March. It is not on the same day each and every year, but it does not change by much.

As temperatures rise and days lengthen, life generally begins to benefit. Not only is it easier to survive since the cold has passed, but food and resources much more plentiful. This is why we associate the Spring with plants blooming and lambs being born!

However, the lifecycle of insects is closely connected to temperature and, as a result, the seasons. Many insects will almost entirely disappear throughout late autumn and winter but will then begin to resurface as temperatures heat up.

In short, the spring equinox just signifies the end of winter and the beginning of the warmer pest-friendly season which leads up to a pest-intensive summer!
