Mice species in Edinburgh

There are several different mouse species which cause problems to property owners in Edinburgh. The most common of these include:

House Mouse

This species is active all-year-round, meaning no matter what month or season it is they will invade your home. They will produce litters with anywhere from 4-16 young around 7 or 8 times a year.

Since these mice are ready to produce young of their own after as little as two months, your home or business can quickly become overrun with these troublesome pests.

These species prefer a diet consisting of cereals but can digest just about anything. Although they are apt climbers, they tend to spend most of their lives on the ground or underneath it.

Field Mouse

True to their name, field mice tend to live outdoors in fields and woodland areas. However, they will enter buildings, usually factories, sheds, and outhouses for protection.

Field mice reach sexual maturity within two months and will produce up to 16 litters of as much as 7-8 young per birth. If a field mouse does take refuge within your property, soon many more will follow.

Although field mice prefer seeds and berries, when they enter a human habitation they will eat almost anything they come across. Like their cousin, the house mouse, they enjoy cereals above all.

Yellow Necked Field Mouse

This species is generally a problem in rural areas. Although they spend a lot of their lives outside, they commonly attempt to enter buildings for food sources or nesting purposes.

Breeding generally takes place from Spring until Autumn, and in this period they can produce multiple litters of several young.

These mice will readily soil stored food, leading to widespread stock damage in factories and warehouses. Additionally, they have a habit of creating fire hazards by chewing through wires.

Why are mice such a big problem in Edinburgh?

Mice might be cute, but the threat they pose to your health and property is anything but.

If you believe that you are dealing with an issue involving any of the species mentioned above, or rats and squirrels, you need to act, and you need to act fast. Otherwise, you may find yourself facing the following serious problems:

Property Damage

Anyone who has had any experience with mice on their property, either commercial or domestic, will be well aware of the surprising amount of damage they can cause. Despite their small size, they have powerful teeth, and will gnaw on a number of materials and objects, including:

  • Insulation
  • Pipes
  • Wires
  • Textiles and Soft Items
  • Doors
  • Floorboards
  • Drywall

Whether they are destroying fabrics for nesting material or gnawing at wood to gain access to a location, the reparations resulting from a mouse infestation can be expensive and costly.

It is also worth noting that due to their habits of chewing on electrical wires, this damage can result in serious potential fire hazards. In fact, around 15% of house fires happen due to rodent interference.

Spreading germs

As with all pest species, mice pose a severe threat in terms of spreading disease and illness.

Contaminating Food Sources

Naturally, mice will seek out sources of food within commercial and domestic properties. When feeding, they will contaminate it with their faeces and urine, making it hazardous for human consumption.

Water Supply

Mice can also contaminate water supplies in a number of ways. If they enter into a pipe system or storage area, their urine and faeces will infect the water. Additionally, it is common to find drowned rats in water sources, again causing disease.

Airborne Particles

Mouse activity will leave all sorts of debris around which when inhaled can infect someone. When this debris is disturbed by a human, there is a good chance infection will follow. Additionally, the infections can spread throughout entire building if the mice access ventilation systems.

Insect Bites

Mice carry a number of mites and ticks with them wherever they go. These pests will carry viruses and bacteria of their own and will pick up others from the mice. These insects will also bite humans, and when they do, disease can follow.

Diseases carried by mice in the UK

Of the many diseases they can carry, some of the most prominent ones are:

Hantavirus

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is a respiratory disease which can be fatal in humans. The virus is highly infectious and can affect even healthy individuals. Symtpoms include flu-like aches and pains as well as trouble breathing in later stages.

Salmonella

Salmonella is a disease which exists in the digestive tract of rodent species. Even pet mice can carry the disease, although it is much more common in feral examples. This disease is highly dangerous and is at best unpleasant, and at worst fatal.

Leptospirosis

This disease is spread through mouse urine and can cause a series of unpleasant and dangerous symptoms when contracted by a human, including jaundice, diarrhoea, muscle pain, and vomiting.

We called Edinburgh Pest Control Co. after we found some droppings in our living room. They sent out a technician the very same day! He was so informative and left out traps on the same visit, couldn’t have asked for more.

Robert came out within a few hours

We could hear things crawling in our drywall and were pretty freaked out. Robert came out within a few hours and found signs of mice. The service we received was excellent, and much less expensive than we expected.

We could not have asked for better service

When we opened our restaurant, we wanted to make sure that our hygiene standards were always at the absolute highest level. Our contract with Edinburgh Pest Control Co. has made sure of this, and we could not have asked for better service.

Their fantastic technicians put it all into place!

We run a hotel and found that gulls on the roof were making a lot of noise and leaving their mess all over our guests’ cars. After a fantastic visit from Derek, he came up with a plan to sort it all out and their fantastic technicians put it all into place!

Traps put in place on the same visit

We have a big warehouse to store our products, and we kept finding small holes in the boxes. It turns out mice were trying to get inside, which meant we had to write off a fair amount of stock. We had a visit on the same day and traps put in place on the same visit.

    Can’t say enough

Our property company often has to deal with pest problems, and our contract with Edinburgh Pest Control Co. is invaluable. Most recently, they cleared up a significant cockroach infestation for us within a couple of weeks. Can’t say enough!
