Are Pests a Problem All-Year-Round?
It is a common misconception that pest problems are only present when the weather warms up. This is absolutely not true, and the diverse range of pests in the UK mean that there is an animal to fill just about every niche that each season presents.
Spring: Many insects will hibernate during Winter and will resurface in Spring. They will become very active as they search for food and build nests while their population expands.
Summer: In Summer many pests are happy to be outside due to the warm weather and they do not require the shelter of our habitations. Insects will still be on the hunt for food wherever it may be.
Autumn: As temperatures start to drop, insects and rodents will begin to move indoors to escape the cold. Additionally, the young born will be full adults and be more active in terms of scavenging.
Winter: Now that the temperatures have dropped to zero or below, rodents especially will need to move indoors in order to survive. Insects, however, may ‘disappear’ as they hibernate for the season.
As you can see, it is a myth that Summer is the only season that gives rise to the spread of pests. Each season presents its own problems, and you should be prepared and take the same precautions no matter what the month is.
Pests to Look out for in Each Month
Although it is difficult state factually which pests will surface in each month exactly, we can paint with broad strokes about which pests you can expect to see:
January: Rats and mice will be very active in and around homes throughout January. There will also be a moderate amount of cockroach activity.
February: Similarly, in February, rats and mice will be particularly active indoors, while cockroaches will remain moderately active.
March: Around this time temperatures will begin to rise, and rodents will begin to rely less on our homes for shelter. Moths, however, will begin to surface as their hibernation ends. Additionally, some ant colonies will begin to establish themselves while cockroaches are still somewhat active.
April: Throughout this month, many other insects such as bed bugs, and fleas will start to become more active, and house flies will begin to resurface.
May: As Spring comes to an end, insects will remain active while wasp nests will begin to surface and the colonies will start to explore for food sources.
June: As Summer truly begins biting insects will begin to flourish along with cockroaches and house flies with everything else mentioned remaining moderately active.
July: Biting insects and cockroaches will continue being active while ants and wasps will enter their busiest and most invasive period of the year.
August: Although house flies should become less prominent as Summer comes to a close, biting insects, cockroaches, wasps, and ants will still pose a real threat to your home.
September: As September goes on all insect activity should start to dwindle, although wasps can still remain very active. Spiders may also start to appear around your home.
October: Biting insects and house flies should be of extremely low risk. However, wasps and ants may still be active, and spiders will be at their most common.
November: In November as it starts to cool rapidly, rodent activity will take a short increase around your property while spiders will remain prominent. Moths and cockroaches may also be active.
December: By the end of the year you can expect cockroach activity, as usual, as well as some spiders still roaming around. As expected in cold weather, mice and rats will be very active.
