A homeowner in Fairmilehead called our team after finding a wasp nest had made its way into a wall cavity on the side of their house. It was right on their granddaughter’s tricycle route and next to the vegetable patch!
With the entry point just metres from where the family spent most of their time outdoors, Edinburgh Pest Control Co. knew it has to take fast action to get the situation under control.

What was inside the cavity wall
Wasps build their nests from wood pulp, which worker wasps strip from fence panels, garden sheds and dead timber.
Then they mix it with their own saliva to create a papery grey material that hardens into place, layer by layer, around a core of hexagonal cells.
A single queen wasp spends the opening weeks of spring building her nest, forming a structure roughly the size of a golf ball before she starts to lay eggs into those hexagonal cells. It isn’t long until each grub hatches and begins to feed.
By the time you discover a wasp nest like this one, tucked out of sight in a cavity wall, the colony is usually well established and increasingly aggravated.
It is exactly why treatment has to reach the nest itself rather than just the wasps visible at the entry point.
Where do wasps nests around Edinburgh homes and gardens
Wasps make their nests almost anywhere that offers shelter from wind and rain.
Roof spaces, sheds and wall cavities all give a queen the same basic shelter she needs, which explains why a cavity wall job like the one in Fairmilehead is far from unusual.
In this case, the wasps had gained access to the cavity through an airbrick low down on the wall.
It is a common weak point where a queen can slip through a vent built to let air circulate rather than keep insects out.
In sheds, lofts and roof spaces
Common wasps favour man-made structures above almost anything else.
A loft, attic or roof space gives a colony the size, warmth and shelter it needs to grow undisturbed for an entire season.
Garden sheds, eaves and outbuildings offer the same dry, dark conditions, and a nest in your loft or tucked behind an eave can grow through most of summer before anyone notices the steady stream of wasps at the entry point.
Outdoors, in the ground and garden features
German wasps take a different approach and will often build a nest in the ground.
Tucking it beneath a shed base, inside an old rodent burrow, or under wood piles stacked against a garden fence.
Fence panels, garden furniture left out over the colder months, and compost heaps left undisturbed all give a young queen the sheltered starting point a first small nest depends on, long before the colony grows large enough to need more room.
How a wasp nest grows from a single queen to thousands
Spring: one queen, one nest
Every wasp nest starts with a single queen who spent the winter in hibernation inside a log pile, loose bark or a gap in brickwork.
She has to hibernate through frost and freezing conditions before emerging when the weather turns milder in spring.
Queen wasps emerge from hibernation hungry, and after feeding on early nectar to rebuild her strength, a queen begins building alone.
She lays her first eggs into a handful of hexagonal cells before those larvae pupate and hatch as the nest’s first brood of worker wasps, usually by early summer.
Summer: the colony takes over
Once the first brood of workers takes over foraging and construction, the queen retreats inside to focus purely on laying eggs.
It is here when the nest can grow rapidly from a golf-ball-sized start to something the size of a football.
A mature nest can hold thousands of wasps by this point, and it is here when you really notice their presence.
Warmer, drier summers across Scotland are part of why wasp populations are rising in gardens as well as the countryside.
Autumn: new queens and a dying colony
Early autumn brings the most important brood of the year.
Here comes the new batch of new queens and male wasps whose only job is to mate before the colony collapses.
Once mating is done, the young queens leave the nest to find somewhere to hibernate alone through winter, while every other wasp in the colony, including the original queen, dies as temperatures drop in late autumn.
Worker wasps also turn noticeably more aggressive through late summer and into early autumn, since the brood they were feeding no longer needs them and they switch from hunting insects to scavenging sugary food instead.
That shift in behaviour is exactly why a nest metres from a busy path, like the one running past the Fairmilehead cavity wall, becomes much more of a hazard.
They pose a real risk of stings. These can be painful and, in rare cases, trigger anaphylactic shock.
Treating a nest in a wall cavity, loft or at height
A nest built high in a roof space, tucked deep into a loft, or hidden well back inside a wall cavity creates the same basic problem.
The colony itself is dangerous to disturb, and reaching it safely, whether that means working at height or getting dust deep enough into a cavity, takes training.
That’s why a job like this always goes to a technician rather than being attempted as DIY.
Wall cavities: airbricks and other access points
The airbrick that let the wasps into the Fairmilehead wall gave our technician a ready-made point to work from. Dust could be applied straight through the vent, with no need to drill anything new into the brickwork.
But it isn’t always this straightforward.
A nest can sit well back from that opening, tucked between the inner and outer leaf where a technician can’t see it directly. Getting a proper hit of dust onto the actual nest matters far more than just treating the entry point.
Other wall cavity jobs work the same way, even without a convenient airbrick.
We sometimes find a weep hole, a gap in the pointing, or we may even need to drill a small inspection hole into the wall to create the same kind of access.
The technique stays the same.
Push the dust deep enough to reach the nest itself, not just the entrance.
Working at height safely
Some nests sit somewhere a technician can’t reach from the ground: high under an eave, tucked into a gable end, or built into a roofline two or three storeys up.
Getting close enough to treat these safely means proper ladders or roof access equipment, used by someone trained to work at height.
The same extension lance we use on wall cavities and lofts often lets a technician treat a high nest from a stable ladder position, without climbing right up to it.
Even so, disturbing thousands of wasps while balanced above ground level is more dangerous than doing the same job with both feet on solid ground.
That’s exactly why working at height training matters as much as the pest control side of the job.
A homeowner attempting this alone faces two risks at once: a fall from height, and a wasp attack triggered mid-climb.

How the dust reaches the whole colony

Telling a nest from a few passing wasps
You can usually identify a wasp nest before you ever see wasps directly.
A steady stream of insects flying in and out of one small gap is a far stronger signal than a couple of wasps drifting around the garden.
Social wasps, the common and German wasps found around Edinburgh homes, build one large nest the whole colony shares. These social insects work as a single unit.
A solitary wasp is different: it builds one small mud cell alone, with no workers or queen involved.
A wasp nest isn’t the same thing as a hive.
That word describes a managed bee colony, not the papery structure a wasp colony builds and abandons within a single year.

Can I remove a wasp nest myself?
DIY wasp control is rarely a good idea for wasp nest removals. An aerosol bought off the shelf isn’t designed for cavity or roof space use, and it can agitate thousands of wasps into defending the colony. Professional wasp treatment is the safer route for anything beyond a small nest you can see and reach easily from the ground yourself. Call a technician the moment you suspect a nest in a loft, cavity wall or roof space, rather than waiting to see how large it gets.
Are wasp stings dangerous?
Wasps can sting repeatedly, unlike bees. For most people the pain fades within a few hours, but stings are painful enough that a nest close to a door, window or path is worth treating quickly. A small number of people are allergic to wasp venom and can react severely. Anyone stung who develops swelling beyond the sting site, difficulty breathing or dizziness should seek medical help straight away.
Should I leave a wasp nest in the garden alone?
A nest built somewhere quiet, such as deep in a hedge or high in a tree well away from doors and windows, can often be left alone. It will usually run its natural course and die off on its own by late autumn.
